Old Friends Reunite on Fall Alumni Day
Wednesday, September 19, 2007
The
St. Andrew’s campus was full of familiar and friendly faces this past
weekend as alumni volunteers, class agents and Association Board
members came back to visit for Alumni Leadership Weekend.
Guests caught up with one another over dinner and cocktails on Friday
night at the O'Brien Arts Center, and on Saturday morning they attended
both student and faculty panels. These meetings afforded an opportunity
for alumni to hear from the student body and from members of the
faculty, to ask questions about current life and learning at St.
Andrew’s and to discuss some of the School’s plans for the future. St.
Andrew’s benefits enormously from the valuable input of its alumni, and
continues to enlist their help in spreading St. Andrew's news and
getting support from classmates.
After these meetings, past and present St. Andreans strolled together
across the sports fields cheering students on in their games. In the
afternoon, alumni reconvened behind Trapnell House for a good
old-fashioned pig roast overlooking the pond. It was a perfect day for
an outdoor party, full of sunlight and tempered by the occasional gust
of wind.

Joe Seiler ’70 told his son, Joe Seiler ’10, about life at St. Andrew’s
in the sixties, and father and son compared sophomore English reading
lists. They found they had James Joyce in common.
Letitia Hickman Green ’80 P’09,’10 told of a serendipitous encounter
with Ashton Richards ’78: Letitia’s son, Kelvin ’09, missed his flight
home from space camp this past summer and was stranded in Atlanta, Ga.
Letitia found Ashton, who lives in Atlanta, through the alumni Web site
and called him to ask for the much needed favor of “rescuing” her son
from the airport. Luckily, Ashton was home, and though it took a moment
for him to place her (“Letitia who?”), he was soon on the job. Letitia
thanked him in person at the pig roast.
“This is the strength of the St. Andrew’s network,” she said. “I was able to find someone to rely on when I needed it most.”
