Prom Weekend kicked off on Friday, April 25 with an evening
performance in Engelhard by Vanessa Carlton, the celebrated
singer-songwriter best known for her Grammy-nominated 2002 single, A Thousand Miles.
At St. Andrew's, the pop star is also known as the big sister of VI
Former Edmund Carlton, who announced his sister's upcoming concert
amidst cheers the previous afternoon. Ms. Carlton's set was serenely
stripped down, showcasing the natural power of her voice and piano
playing. The audience was enchanted, and a few bold students managed to
obtain autographs after the show.

Vanessa Carlton performs in Eneglhard Hall.
Defying the more exclusive
prom traditions of old, many St. Andreans celebrated prom in small
friend groups as opposed to pairing up into couples. In groups and in
pairs, prom-goers enjoyed dinner out on the town or cozily cooking in
faculty appartments.
Returing from their dinner dates, students
flooded into a tent on the front lawn where Urban Exchange, a New York
City based band whose extensive and eminently danceable repertoire
includes classic and contemporary hits, had begun their set. Laughter
and cheers filled the tent as students grooved to the band's pulsing
beats, and the dancers continued for hours, stopping only to refuel
with mini-cupcakes and soda.

Fourth Formers form a dance circle.

Students rock out to Urban Exchange.
