At the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Lindsay Payne ’01 advanced to
finalist status in the 100 breaststroke last night. After Lindsay and
competitor Jessica Botzum tied for eighth place, the two swam a match
race to determine who would go on to the final. Before 14,500
spectators, Lindsay took the lead from her opponent, beating her by
0.02 seconds.
Lindsay will compete tonight (Tuesday, July 1) in the final, which will be televised at 8 pm eastern time on channel USA.
Since graduating from St. Andrew’s, Lindsay has established herself as
one of the most distinguished swimmers in Division III history. She has
won seven individual NCAA titles, set records for the 100 and 200-yard
breaststroke and become the first woman to win the 100 breaststroke
NCAA title four times. In 2006 she was named Collegiate Woman Athlete
of the Year representing swimming and diving and she took home the 18th
annual Honda Inspiration Award recognizing the outstanding performance
of a female athlete. Last year, she finished ninth in the 100
breaststroke at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships,
held in Indianapolis. Her outstanding performance won her a spot on
Team USA, and last summer she traveled across the world to compete at
the 2007 Japan International Grand Prix in Chiba.
