Swinging and swamp-walking at Echo Hill

III and IV Formers boarded buses bright and early for an action-packed day at Echo Hill outdoor school. Forms split up into small groups led by Echo Hill counselors, who guided students through a variety of outdoor activities. Ideal forums for getting acquainted and comfortable, Echo Hill activities challenge students to communicate, collaborate and take risks in order to accomplish their goals. Whether struggling to disentangle themselves from a human knot, supporting one another’s balance along wobbly wires or cheering classmates on through a difficult climb, St. Andreans engaged in teamwork that was edifying and also a blast.

IV Formers spent the day climbing, zip-lining and swinging through treetops, while III Formers braved the notorious “swamp walk”. While some had reservations about wading waist deep through mud, all swamp-walkers agreed it was a thoroughly good time, and after helping one another from the final muck pit, they all dashed into the Chesapeake Bay for a good soak. “It would have been almost impossible to do alone,” reflected one III Former, fresh from the showers, “but since we were all together, that made it fun.” The Echo Hill experience serves as an exciting introduction to the joys and challenges of the year ahead.
