Warner Gallery opens with alumni exhibition
Thursday, October 28, 2004
Following the dedication of the O'Brien Arts Center earlier in the day, members of the St. Andrew's community held the first official events in the new building. After dinner, the Warner Art Gallery displayed its opening exhibition, 'The Relevance of Observation,' a collection of artworks by various alumni artists.
The list of artists included Bruce Colburn '82, Christina Court '92, Veronica Erard '97, Brad Hamilton '84, Elizabeth Hickok '92, Jennifer Hughes '92, Chris "Lucky" Leone '79, Garner McCandless '91, Chris Reiger '95, John Schoonover '63 and Robert Seyffert '71.
Headmaster Tad Roach opened the exhibit with the following remarks:
"It is my pleasure to welcome alumni, parents, students, Trustees and friends of the School, and especially the alumni artists who have made this exhibition possible.
"A number of years ago, our two great art teachers, Peter Brooke and John McGiff, spoke eloquently to me about the need for an art gallery at St. Andrew's, a place where professional art and student art could be displayed for the community as a whole. Both Peter and John knew that a gallery would enrich the artistic, cultural and intellectual life of the School; and beginning five years ago, we created a gallery in the room right inside the entrance to the Cameron Gymnasium. John and Elizabeth McGiff created and nurtured that space and that gallery, and they prepared the way for this lovely new space.
"Tonight we thank the Warner family for this generosity in making it possible to create this gallery. As a Trustee and former parent, Patsy Warner has made distinguished contributions to the life of this School. She is a passionate advocate of the faculty, and over the past three years she has helped us develop a compelling vision for this building. She envisioned spaces within this building that would function as inspiring places for public exhibitions and concerts, but at the same time provided a warm and creative environment for our students and faculty who worked here every day. She spent hours choosing colors, furniture and finishes throughout the building.
"We thank Sandy Warner, Patsy Warner and Michael Warner, Class of 2000, for their deep commitment to St. Andrew's, and especially tonight for their gift of this magnificent gallery.
"I would also like to thank Joanne Payson, an art historian, art dealer and present parent who helped the McGiffs and Katy Cadwalader (wife of Gardner '66 and mother of Genevieve '00 and Owen '03) create this exhibit, and who also made possible the incredible exhibition catalog available here tonight. This professional and museum quality publication was a direct result of Joanne's determination and vision for this evening's exhibition."
